On the 1st<\/sup> August every year, Yorkshire comes together to celebrate a special day dedicated to this great county – Yorkshire Day! However, it\u2019s not only celebrated here up north. In fact, people all over the UK don their flat caps and do their best Sean Bean impression on this momentous day.<\/p>\n

We here at Geronigo are proud to say that we\u2019re Yorkshire born and bred, so read on as we highlight only some of the best things about this grand old county!<\/p>\n

The History<\/b><\/p>\n

One of the great things about Yorkshire is that it is well and truly steeped in history. From being a vital part of the Industrial Revolution, once being the home to both Roman and Viking settlers, Yorkshire certainly is scribed into the history books. You can see this for yourself as you travel around the county where you can feast your eyes on a plentiful amount of beautiful structures varying from castles and churches to abbeys and waterways.<\/p>\n

The Countryside<\/b><\/p>\n

Being home to a number of bustling cities, it\u2019s easy to forget that Yorkshire boasts examples of stunning natural beauty. This is especially evident at natural locations such as Yorkshire\u2019s Heritage Coastline, the South Pennines and the Yorkshire Wolds. Let\u2019s not forget about the National Parks, where there are over 3200 square kilometres of open beauty spread across three Parks.<\/p>\n

The Cities<\/b><\/p>\n

Many people may not associate Yorkshire with city life, but this county is home to a number of major cities such as Leeds, Sheffield, York \u2013 and let\u2019s not forget UK\u2019s City of Culture 2017, Hull. These are all major players in the economies of each region and nationally, too \u2013 Leeds is home to the largest financial sector outside of the capital.<\/p>\n

The Food<\/b><\/p>\n

You\u2019re probably going to guess what food item we\u2019re going to mention in this section, and rightly so. Can you tell me one person who doesn\u2019t like Yorkshire Puddings? All puddings aside, Yorkshire offers more culinary delights through items such as Parkin, Wensleydale Cheese and Henderson\u2019s Relish. If eating out is more your thing, then there is no other county in England (outside of London) which holds as many Michelin-starred restaurants as Yorkshire. One of these, the Black Swan pub in Oldstead, North Yorkshire, has recently been named the best restaurant in the world!<\/p>\n

The Drink<\/b><\/p>\n

All this food business is thirsty work, but that\u2019s okay because Yorkshire is home to (probably) the best tea in the world \u2013 Yorkshire\u2019s number one export. If you\u2019re after something a bit stronger, then Yorkshire really is the place to be, as it is home to a number of historic and modern breweries conjuring up some of the best ales in the UK.<\/p>\n

The Culture<\/b><\/p>\n

The past few years has seen Yorkshire boost its cultural offerings with Hull\u2019s recent UK City of Culture award and Leeds\u2019 bid for European Capital of Culture 2023. However, the county has always boasted a number of influential institutions such as the Hepworth Gallery and Yorkshire Sculpture Park, both based in Wakefield. Let\u2019s just say that there is no shortage of creative minds up north!<\/p>\n

The Adventures<\/b><\/p>\n

Yorkshire is home to an incredible number of adventures which you can take part in. Due to it being the largest county in the country, there\u2019s no surprise that there\u2019s an activity to suit everyone in Yorkshire. From Clay Pigeon Shooting in Skipton<\/a>, to Kayaking in Harrogate<\/a> and Caving in Ingleton<\/a>, the land really does lend itself well to providing first class adventures for all.
