So, what\u2019s on your\nlist? Socks? Perfume? Slippers? Home knitted scarf and gloves? Some might say\nthat\u2019s a sad little list, others may light up like a proverbial Christmas tree\nlight at the very thought of a pair of socks. Everyone to their own, we say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, being sensible,\nbecause we know Geronigo<\/strong>\u00ae<\/strong><\/a> readers will not want socks. They\u2019ll have pushed the boat out and asked\nfor something more exciting. But, they\u2019re not alone. Let\u2019s face it, we know\nthere is one thing that everyone wants, yes everyone \u2013 excitement. Some people\ncan fake excitement when the fancy wrapping reveals some dull, uninspiring gift;\na gift that will find its way into \u2018gifts to give away\u2019 box or the charity shop.\nCharity shops just love Christmas because they can restock their shelves with\nall those unwanted pressies in January. Most get totally overwhelmed by the\nsheer volume of stuff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the thought\nthat counts, isn\u2019t it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But that means that if\nyou get a dull and boring present, then the person that gave it to you either thought\nyou are dull and boring or they don\u2019t think you\u2019re much thought at all. Yes,\nit\u2019s harsh, but unwanted gifts are a real bummer. They are also bad for the\nenvironment, unless you get them down to the charity shop for someone that does\nlike them to give them a new home. If you\u2019re a bit of a DIY fanatic, maybe you\ncan re-purpose that god-awful jumper as\u2026., now let me see? Yes, I\u2019ve got it,\nyou could unravel it and knit a pair of socks to give someone you don\u2019t like\nmuch next year. Otherwise millions of bits of plastic, clothing or\nfoul-smelling cheap perfume are no more than junk and the world doesn\u2019t need\nany more junk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s the excitement\nthat counts, isn\u2019t it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spot on! But and there\nis always a pesky but, isn\u2019t there? But – and there it is again, it\u2019s relevant\nin this case. Excitement comes in different forms. There\u2019s the\u2019 whoo hoo\u2019\nreaction and the \u2018ooh\u2019, or \u2018I don\u2019t believe it\u2019, or \u2018how did you know?\u2019 These\ncan be faked for the sake of your auntie who has done her best and you don\u2019t\nwant to disappoint her. But, when they are genuine cries of sheer joy, they can\nbe for a very special \u2018thing\u2019 that you\u2019ve always wanted, or for an action activity\nthat you\u2019ve always wanted to do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excitement can fade<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yep, if you get a\n\u2018thing\u2019 for Christmas that you\u2019ve always wanted \u2013 whatever that may be \u2013 psychologists\nsay that your excitement is at its peak on getting \/ seeing the gift and then\nslowly the excitement fades as you get familiar and used to seeing or using the\nnew and exciting \u2018thing\u2019. After two short weeks, you are so used to having it\nthey say, that the excitement levels have almost dropped to zero. Tough really\nespecially as it probably cost the giver an arm and a leg if it was that longed\nfor \u2018thing\u2019. The same psychologists also say that if you get an \u2018experience\u2019 as\na gift rather than a \u2018thing\u2019, the excitement lasts for a very long time, even\nafter you\u2019ve actually had the experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experiences are the\nway to go, obviously<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

First, there is the sheer excitement of opening the smart black gift box and revealing just what amazing experience this soon to be best friend has got you. Maybe it\u2019s a skydiving experience.<\/a> It could be a driving a high-performance car<\/a>, like a Ferrari. Maybe they know you like to go out with a group, so they get you a laser-quest or paintball experience<\/a> for a group of 10. Or they go for the latest trends like bubble football <\/a>\u2013 what a laugh! Now, be honest, you\u2019ve opened the box and you\u2019re super excited, then there\u2019s the anticipation of actually taking part in the adventure, and of course the mega-excitement of the day itself when excitement levels are way off the scale. The experience itself comes to an end and you\u2019ve made new friends or cemented friendships, then there are the memories \/ photos and the decision that all that excitement has to be repeated and possibly you\u2019ve found a new hobby. Wow, now that\u2019s value for money from one Christmas gift and no trips to the charity shop or topping up the \u2018give these gifts away\u2019 box. Those psychologists know a thing or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
