That\u2019s\nfine if you need to kick-back and relax after a hard week at work.\nBut, is this what every weekend looks like? Are you missing out on\nsome awesome experiences? Not many, it\u2019s true, but some\nof the healthiest and happiest people on earth are those that stay\nactive right up and into what they used to call \u2018old age\u2019. In\nfact, some of these people could give others half their age a run for\ntheir money and all because they stayed active and, of course, ate\ndecent food. Lotions and potions won\u2019t ward of illness and ageing,\nbuy staying active will. Why? Because as you move, your brain\nreleases serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. These are the happy\nchemicals produced by your body during exercise. Compare that with\nthe groggy, sleepy and often low mood that you get after slouching\naround all weekend or staring at screens. This also applies to\nstress. Activity is a proven stress-buster, particularly through long\ncold and wet winters. I know, it\u2019s often the time you feel like\ncurling up and shutting out the cold cruel world, but it is actually\nthe time you should make the most effort to get out there and get\nmoving. Exercise also slows down the release of stress hormones. High\nstress hormones increase the chance of illness. Pretty impressive results from just moving a\nbit more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Science\nBit &#8211; <\/strong>Exercise causes changes in antibodies and white blood cells\n(WBC). WBCs are the body&#8217;s immune system cells that fight disease.\nThese antibodies or WBCs circulate more rapidly, so they can detect\nillnesses earlier than they might if your system is sluggish. And people who were active and stopped tend to be more\ndepressed and anxious than those who maintain an active lifestyle.\nSo, exercise seems to also be important for treating anxiety and\ndepression, and preventing a relapse. If you think about it, it\nstands to reason. You know how you feel after an activity because you\nfeel great.
