\nAs\nsoon as the Christmas decorations go up in public places, such as\nshops and town squares, our thoughts turn to Christmas, whether we\nlike it or not. But Christmas didn\u2019t always creep into our\nconscious thoughts so early. Back in the day, the Christmas season\nstarted on Christmas Day itself. That\u2019s correct, December 25 is the\nofficial start of the 12 days of Christmas. And what pops into your\nhead when we mention the 12 days of Christmas, that annoying\n\u2018earworm\u2019 of a carol \u2018The Twelve Days of Christmas.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nAlong\nwith other irritating songs of the same ilk, like \u2018Ten Green\nBottles,\u2019 this carol is done to death every year by enthusiastic\ncarollers who plow their way through every verse, triumphant that\nthey can remember each verse of what many thinks of as a dirge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nSo,\nwhy 12 days?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nChristians\nmark the period between the birth of Christ and the coming of the\nthree kings, or three wise men. This begins on December 25 and runs\nthrough January 6, which is the Epiphany, or Three Kings’ Day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\nThe\n12 Days of Christmas carol is basically someone boasting about all\nthe gifts they received from their “true love” during the\n12 days of Christmas. Each verse builds on the previous one until,\npresumably, the recipient has a house full of birds, gold rings, men\nleaping and drumming, and women dancing and milking. We are not quite\nsure about these later items as gifts, but the singer seems pleased.\nWell, it was 1780 when it was first released on the unsuspecting ears\nof the public. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nGiving\nsomeone all the gifts in the song would be a bit pricy today. Based\non current market rates, you\u2019d be looking at around the 40k mark.\nPhew!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nMany\nVersions Over the Years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nThere\nhave been many versions of this carol over the years, many to serve\ncomic value. We have our own version for 2019, and the 12 gifts are\nmuch more exciting, and you won\u2019t have to shell-out 40K \u2013\nhonest! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nOn\nthe 3rd day of Christmas<\/strong>,\nmy mum sent to me. A skydiving gift voucher from Jump\nThis<\/a>\u00ae. Oh my God, this is on my bucket list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nOn\nthe 4th day of Christmas<\/strong>,\nmy aunt sent to me. A zorbing experience with Roll\nMania<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nOn\nthe 8th day of Christmas<\/strong>,\nmy granny gave to me. A quad biking voucher from Quad\nNation<\/a>\u00ae. Granny has always been a bit of an adventurer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
