Walking across is the best\nway to appreciate the views, and some local pubs will give you a\nfirst-class advantage point while you sip a drink or two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\none of the UK’s most significant science centres, We\nthe Curious<\/a><\/strong> offers\na fun day out for the entire family. Located right in the centre of\ntown with hundreds of hands-on exhibits to explore, live shows and a\nPlanetarium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Park\nStreet<\/a><\/strong> is\na major shopping street in Bristol with lots of quirky stores and\nplaces to stop for coffee and tasty eats. Linking the city centre to\nClifton, the building of Park Street started in 1761, and it was\nBristol’s earliest example of uniformly stepped hillside terracing.\nLook up the street, and you will be treated to a dramatic view of the\nWills Memorial Building. Keep an eye out for Banksy<\/a><\/strong> artwork,\nlocated at the bottom of the street. As Banksy is one of the famous\nBristolians, you can also do a tour<\/a><\/strong> of\nhis artwork around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

J\nK Rowling<\/a><\/strong>,\nanother famous Bristolian, went to School in Winterbourne of the\nNorthern outskirts of Bristol. If you want to see where this\nacclaimed author learned her early English skills, you can visit\nthe school<\/a><\/strong>.\nWell, probably just look at it as I don’t suppose the teachers\nwouldn’t be too impressed by tourists gawping through the classroom\nwindows from the playground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bristol\nZoo’s<\/a><\/strong> stated\nmission is to “maintain and defend biodiversity through breeding\nendangered species, conserving threatened species and habitats and\npromoting a wider understanding of the natural world”. The\nmammal collection at the zoo numbers around 300, representing 50\nspecies, including gorillas, Asiatic lions, pygmy hippos, and red\npandas. Among species now on view at Bristol which are rare or absent\nin the other UK zoos are Livingstone’s fruit bats, aye-ayes and\nquolls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brunel’s\nSS Great Britain<\/a><\/strong> is\na huge ship which, it is claimed ‘changed the world’ is located in\nthe Bristol Harbour. Launched in 1843, you can visit the ship and\nsoak up its history and marvel at its structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Arnolfini\nart gallery<\/a><\/strong> is\nan international art centre and gallery. It has a programme of\ncontemporary art exhibitions, artist’s performance, music and dance\nevents, poetry and book readings, talks, lectures and a cinema.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\namazing Cargo\nat Wapping Wharf<\/a><\/strong> is\nhome to a host of independent eateries, shops and more. This new\nconcept made entirely of converted shipping containers is part of\nWapping Wharf and boasts stunning views across the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just\nacross from Cargo, the M\nShed museum<\/a><\/strong> is\na vast space offering several exciting exhibitions for people of all\nages to enjoy. There are working exhibits outside the building that\nyou can see when the museum is closed, such as the electric cranes\nand Fairbairn Steam crane.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If\nvast, rolling green space is what your heart desires, then a visit to\nthe Downs<\/a><\/strong> is\na must. The Downs consists of Clifton Down and Durdham Down,\nbordering the Clifton Village, Clifton and Redland areas of Bristol.\nTogether they represent a vast area of protected parkland right on\nthe edge of the city within walking distance of other major\nattractions such as the Clifton Suspension Bridge, giving the\nimpression of being surrounded by countryside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

HISTORY\nOF BRISTOL AND ITS NAME<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iron\nAge hill forts and Roman villas have been found at the junction the\nrivers Frome and Avon, and records show, from around the beginning of\nthe 11th century, the settlement at this spot was known as Brycgstow\n(Old English “the place at the bridge”). Bristol received a\nroyal charter in 1155 and was historically divided between\nGloucestershire and Somerset until 1373 when it became a county of\nitself. From the 13th to the 18th century, Bristol was among the top\nthree English cities, after London, in tax receipts.
