What is Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)?

SUP, otherwise known as Stand Up Paddleboarding, is an activity which, in its current form, dates back to the 1900s – originating from Hawaii. In the Hawaiian language, it translates to ‘Ku Hoe He’e Nalu’, which means to stand and paddle to surf a wave. However, SUP has been found as early as 1,000 B.C. So, it’s certainly been around for quite a while in some form or another!

SUP is a variation of Paddleboarding in which, yes, you’ve guessed it – you’ll be standing up with a paddle, instead of kneeling and paddling with your hands. Essentially, it’s a cross between canoeing and surfing – creating a totally exhilarating activity that’s suitable for all ages and levels of ability, and perfect for stag/hen dos, corporate events, and birthday parties!

You can take part in Stand Up Paddleboarding on the sea if you like, but if you were looking for something a little more relaxed, you’ll be happy to know that SUP sessions also take place on calm rivers and lakes too!
