Itinerary
Day 1: Perth – Geraldton
We leave the metropolis heading north. The journey takes us via Lancelin to Cervantes, the gateway to Nambung National Park. The Pinnacles, which are among the most visited natural wonders in the state, are located in a flat, almost surreal desert landscape. During a walking tour, thousands of bizarre limestone pillars—some up to five meters high—offer breathtaking photo opportunities.
After an enjoyable coastal drive through Jurien Bay and Leeman, we arrive in Geraldton, the sunniest city in Western Australia. A visit to Mount Scott provides an overview of Geraldton and Grey’s Bay. The site also serves as a memorial to the victims of the warship HMAS Sydney II, which sank off the coast.
To round off the day, we visit the architecturally striking St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in the center of Geraldton.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Geraldton
Day 2: Geraldton – Kalbarri (B)
This morning, we take a light aircraft flight to visit the Wallabi Islands, part of the Houtman Abrolhos archipelago. In 1629, the Dutch trading ship Batavia was shipwrecked here, followed by a bloody mutiny.
Back on the mainland, we continue along the coastal road via Port Gregory to Kalbarri National Park. The rugged coastal formations here are of stunning beauty. In the evening, we arrive in the charming and tranquil town of Kalbarri.
Accommodation: Kalbarri Edge Resort, Kalbarri
Day 3: Kalbarri – Monkey Mia (Shark Bay) (B)
After breakfast, we return to Kalbarri National Park—this time to enjoy breathtaking views down into the Murchison Gorge. Depending on the season, our drive through the park and into the Shark Bay World Heritage Area may reveal the iconic “Wildflowers” for which Western Australia is famous.
In the afternoon, we arrive in Monkey Mia, home to the famous dolphins that voluntarily swim to the shore almost every day of the year to be fed.
After dinner, we enjoy a short evening walk guided by a local Aboriginal host, who shares ancient stories and the sounds of the didgeridoo beneath Western Australia's dazzling star-filled sky.
Optional: Monkey Mia Sunset Cruise
Enjoy the stunning sights of the sky’s continual change of colours reflected off the sea during this relaxing 1.5-hour cruise. Purchase a drink from our fully licensed Ocean Lounge Bar, or bring your own (BYO permitted). A tranquil way to end the day.
Accommodation: Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort, Shark Bay
Day 4: Monkey Mia – Carnarvon (B)
In the morning, you have the chance to watch the dolphin feeding up close and learn fascinating details about these intelligent creatures. The Shark Bay Interpretive Centre in nearby Denham provides further information about this World Heritage area. Continuing our journey, we stop at the unique Shell Beach and then marvel at the world’s oldest living organisms — the stromatolites — at Hamelin Pool. Our drive takes us through remote Outback landscapes as we make our way to Carnarvon.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Carnarvon
Day 5: Carnarvon – Coral Bay – Exmouth (B)
Today we enjoy a leisurely drive to Coral Bay, located at the southern end of the Ningaloo Reef. Experts claim the underwater world here is even more diverse than that of the Great Barrier Reef. The reef is very close to the beach and can easily be explored with flippers and a snorkel, or on a glass-bottom boat tour. The reef is home to a wide variety of marine life, including corals, rare sea stars, crabs, lobsters, and over 500 species of fish. In the afternoon, we continue north to Exmouth.
Accommodation: Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, Exmouth
Day 6: Exmouth (B)
From Vlamingh Head Lighthouse, we enjoy an incredible view over the North West Cape, the Ningaloo Reef, and the towering antennas of the Harold E. Holt naval communication station. We take a hike through the Mandu Mandu Gorge in Cape Range National Park, where we keep an eye out for rare rock wallabies. In the afternoon, we relax at the picturesque and safe-to-swim Turquoise Bay and again enjoy the colorful, vibrant underwater world of the Ningaloo Marine Park. We return to our accommodation in Exmouth.
Accommodation: Mantarays Ningaloo Beach Resort, Exmouth
Day 7: Exmouth – Karijini National Park (B)
Today we travel northeast across the vast Pilbara region. In the language of the local Aboriginal people, “bilypara” means “dry” — a fitting description of this immense area, which is nearly twice the size of Germany and dominated by red desert and mountain ranges. Our accommodation lies in the heart of Karijini National Park, ensuring a tranquil and awe-inspiring atmosphere.
Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat, Karijini National Park
Day 8: Karijini National Park (B, L)
The rock formations in Western Australia’s second-largest national park are among the oldest on the planet, and its landscapes are among the most spectacular and colorful in all of Australia. The iron-rich highlands offer countless gorges with permanent waterholes and dramatic lookouts. The steep, eroded gorges and multicolored rock layers give this rugged region its unique magic. We hike to Fortescue Falls and Fern Pool, both with year-round water and great for swimming. We also visit Oxer Lookout, with its incredible view over four converging gorges.
Accommodation: Karijini Eco Retreat, Karijini National Park
Day 9: Karijini National Park – Port Hedland (B)
We begin the day by enjoying the serene atmosphere of the Eco Retreat. Eventually, we depart the iron ore region of Western Australia and head toward Port Hedland. With a bit of luck, we may see one of the impressive iron ore trains, which average 2 to 3 kilometers in length, arriving or departing from the town.
Accommodation: Hospitality Motel, Port Hedland
Day 10: Port Hedland – Broome (B)
Today’s journey north takes us through the sparse, low-lying vegetation of the Great Sandy Desert. Much of Western Australia’s northern coastline is lined with vast mangrove forests. A notable exception is Eighty Mile Beach, where the white sands gleam alongside the turquoise sea, inviting visitors to pause or collect seashells. However, the presence of stingrays, stonefish, and sharks offers good reason to admire the beach from the shore.
In the evening, we arrive in Broome, Australia’s pearl capital. This vibrant town enjoys endless sunshine—and on certain nights, the moon famously casts a shimmering “Staircase to the Moon” across the ocean.
Accommodation: Cable Beach Club Resort, Broome
Day 11: Broome City Tour (B)
Today, we explore the vibrant town of Broome together. With around 15,000 residents, Broome is the tourist hub of the Kimberley region. Its blend of intellectual and alternative vibes makes it a trendy destination.
At the heart of Broome is Chinatown, a small, uniformly designed town center with a subtle Asian flair. It’s the focal point of local activity, featuring Sun Pictures, the oldest open-air cinema in the world, along with a wide array of street cafés, restaurants, galleries, souvenir shops, and pearl jewelry stores. Broome has a deep-rooted history in the pearl industry—once focused on mother-of-pearl, now centered on cultured pearls. In the early days, pearl diving was extremely dangerous. Today, the Chinese and Japanese cemeteries serve as solemn reminders of Broome’s multicultural past.
At Gantheaume Point, where towering red sandstone cliffs plunge into the deep blue ocean, you can see 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints during low tide. The clean, warm, turquoise waters off the coast nurture pearls that are among the most sought-after in the world. Divers from around the globe once came here in search of fortune, helping establish Broome as Australia’s pearl capital.
A visit to one of the few pearl farms in the Kimberley region open to the public offers fascinating insight into modern pearl cultivation.
In the afternoon, relax at Cable Beach, one of the safest and most stunning beaches in the world. Enjoy your free time at your leisure!
Accommodation: Cable Beach Club Resort, Broome
Day 12: Broome – Fitzroy Crossing
In Derby, the administrative town of West Kimberley with tropical flair, we visit its main attraction with a dark past: the Prison Tree. Aboriginal prisoners were once held in the hollow trunk of this ancient boab tree. Today, the gnarled giant is under protection, and out of respect for its history, it should no longer be entered. We then travel comfortably along the Great Northern Highway toward our destination for the day: Fitzroy Crossing.
Accommodation: Fitzroy River Lodge
Day 13: Fitzroy Crossing – Kununurra (B)
Today starts with a visit to Geikie Gorge National Park. During a scenic boat trip through the 14 km-long, up to 30 m-deep gorge, there’s a chance to spot freshwater crocodiles and admire remnants of an ancient, uplifted coral reef. We then continue to Halls Creek, a town shaped by the gold rush of 1885. A short detour takes us to the impressive China Wall – a natural vertical quartz formation up to 5 meters high, formed by erosion, not human hands. Traveling along the Great Northern Highway between the Durack and Carr Boyd Ranges, we reach today’s destination: Kununurra.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 14: El Questro & Wyndham (B)
Early in the morning, we drive to El Questro Wilderness Park, where a short walk leads us through one of the region’s spectacular gorges. We continue along the Great Northern Highway between the Durack and Carr Boyd Ranges to Wyndham – the northernmost town in Western Australia. From the Five Rivers Lookout, we enjoy breathtaking views over the Ord, Forrest, King, Durack, and Pentecost Rivers, as well as the Cambridge Gulf and surrounding mangrove swamps and tidal flats. Depending on the season, we visit Marglu Billabong in Parry Lagoons Nature Reserve – an important bird sanctuary home to over 20,000 birds. Later, we stop at The Grotto – a hidden waterhole at the base of a small but picturesque gorge. Surrounded by steep rock walls, it is fed by a 15-meter waterfall during the rainy season. Return to Kununurra.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 15: Ord River Boat Tour (B)
Around midday, we’re picked up from the hotel and driven to Lake Argyle. We make a brief stop at the historic Durack Homestead Museum – a replica built from the original stones of the family’s home. A nearby lookout point offers expansive views over the vast Lake Argyle. The 55 km-long boat ride back to Kununurra passes through spectacular landscapes, offering many opportunities to spot diverse flora and fauna. A colorful sunset rounds off the experience.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 16: Bungle Bungle Scenic Flight (B/L)
Today’s excursion promises an unforgettable experience. We discover the impressive rock formations of the Bungle Bungles both by air and on foot. The scenic flight provides amazing views over Lake Argyle, the Carr Boyd Range, and vast cattle stations. As we approach, a magical sandstone landscape unfolds. A 4WD drive and short hike take us to Cathedral Gorge, surrounded by beehive-shaped rock domes. During a picnic lunch, we marvel at the enormous “beehive” formations. On the return flight, enjoy views of the Argyle Diamond Mine and the rugged Osmand Range.
Accommodation: Kununurra Country Club Resort
Day 17: Kununurra – Katherine (B)
Today, we say goodbye to Kununurra and Western Australia. Soon after, we cross the border into the Northern Territory. Traveling along the Victoria Highway, we continue comfortably to Katherine.
Accommodation: Knotts Crossing Resort
Day 18: Katherine – Cooinda (B)
After breakfast, we begin with a 2-hour boat cruise through the spectacular Katherine Gorge – a wonderful experience with stunning scenery and the opportunity to view Aboriginal rock art. Via the Kakadu Highway, we reach Kakadu National Park. At Nourlangie Rock, we discover ancient galleries featuring Aboriginal art up to 20,000 years old.
Accommodation: Gagudju Lodge Cooinda
Day 19: Kakadu – Darwin (B)
A breathtaking cruise through Yellow Waters gives us a rare chance to observe numerous wildlife species in their natural habitat. During the dry season, the area becomes a vital stopover for many birds, and we’ll also spot crocodiles up close. At Ubirr Rock – in the heart of Kakadu National Park – we’ll have time to admire the world’s oldest rock art and take in the panoramic view across the park. Another stop at the Mamukala Wetlands offers the chance to watch thousands of magpie geese – a stunning UNESCO-listed natural heritage site. In the evening, we arrive in Darwin, where the unforgettable tour ends at the pre-booked accommodation.
