WHAT IS ST ANDREW’S DAY?
In Scotland (and across the world where Scots have left their mark), St Andrew’s Day is a celebration of Scottish culture, complete with traditional music, dancing, hearty food and good cheer. It also kicks off the season of Scottish winter festivals.
A SLICE OF SCOTLAND IN MELBOURNE
Built in 1849 by Scotsman William Taylor, Overnewton Castle began as a modest bluestone homestead on 13,000 acres of grazing land. After a trip back to Scotland in 1859, Taylor transformed it into a grand Scottish Baronial Castle, complete with turrets, a billiard room, dairy and butcher shop — making it a jewel of Keilor’s history and a living testament to Melbourne’s Gold Rush-era ties to Scotland.
THE FESTIVAL SITE
The festival takes place both indoors and out, so there’s something for everyone:
- Ceilidhs in the grand ballroom throughout the day
- Highland dancers & pipers performing on the lawns
- Children's Entertainment & face painting in the gardens
- Craft market in the onsite car park
Grab a bite, sip something cold, bring an instrument for the open music sessions, or find a shady spot to roll out your picnic rug and watch the fun unfold.
