Learn more about traditional Bulgarian food, visit local fresh-produce market and try some of our delicious specialties. Moreover, while searching for delicacies, we will pass along some of the most prominent landmarks in the city. Highlights Try traditional Bulgarian dishes Explore Plovdiv’s most famous landmarks Shop at a local fresh-produce market Description
Our meeting point will be the Roman stadium. We will then go to an artisan bakery. There we will try banitsa, which is a pastry filled with white cheese, typically served with airyan. You will learn more about all the different kinds of banitsa we have and various cooking methods used for its preparation.
The Hill of the Liberators is what comes up on our list. The hill is dedicated to the Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War for the liberation of Plovdiv and Bulgaria. At the top of the hill there is a big monument of a Russian soldier, called Alyosha. The Turkish word bunar , meaning “well” was used to describe the numerous water source found at the hill. You can enjoy the beautiful view of Plovdiv and take some photos.
After our panoramic experience, we will visit a grocery market. At Chetvartak pazara (Thursday market) one can buy locally-grown fruits and vegetables, different kinds of nuts and spices, Bulgarian honey and honey products.
Our lunch will take place at an authentic Bulgarian restaurant where we will try one of the most famous dishes among tourists, which are true favourites of all locals as well. Usually, Bulgarians start their meal with salad and rakia (fruit brandy). Another example of a typical dish is the grilled meat, in the form of kebapche or kyutfe(meatball). We also cook veggie “meatballs” made of spinach, potatoes, zucchini.
Next we will visit a small shop which offers different range of products coming from the Rhodope mountains. There we will try lyutenitsa – bread spread made of peppers, tomatoes, carrots, spices and herbs. Every family, especially those living in villages, has its own recipe – some make it more spicy, others blend it to perfection.
Finally, we arrive at Kapana – Plovdiv’s creative district, known for its many arts and crafts stores, stylish cafes, and the events it hosts all year round, the most famous of which is Kapana Fest. We will have a look around its small cobblestone streets and will finish the tour with a dessert in a cake shop near Kapana.
