We start with a guided tour by torchlight, where the owls look alert and awake – very different from as you see them during the day. After the tour warm up with a hog roast (vegetarian option available) and mulled wine or hot apple juice with cinnamon. This is followed by a flying demonstration of small owls which takes place in the Indoor Flying area with special low level lighting. Finally we end the evening with owls free flying in their natural element – outside in the flying field with special underground low level lighting with the owls glimmering through the lights as they cross the flying ground, or the Barn Owl hovering over one of the lights – amazing.

Flying a falcon to the lure is one of the most intense and exhilarating encounters with the animal world you are ever likely to have. This experience is designed to safely introduce you to the art of lure swinging, the method used to fly falcons to reach peak fitness. You also get the chance to observe and handle these birds at close quarters, a must for anyone who has a passion for falcons. However we strongly recommend that you do not choose this experience as your first introduction to experiencing birds of prey, choose a Hawk Day first.

Over the last few decades Falconry has developed and changed on many fronts as well as becoming popular with people from all walks of life. There has been new equipment designs, improved veterinary care and advice, innovative aviary designs, improved success with captive breeding and rearing. All this has added to the depth of information available and the different techniques used to train, fly and hunt Hawks, Falcons etc., in this modern era. For a beginner it is now much harder to understand the options available and to work out what is required to set them on the right path to achieving their goal of keeping and flying a bird of prey. With this in mind, here at the International Centre for Birds of Prey where we have a long and well respected history of teaching first class courses, we decided to increase the length of our falconry course from 5 to 6 days. The increased length is designed to offer the student a broader information base and more practical experience from which to start their falconry journey. It is proving very popular I am glad to say. This course is very intensive and combines practical demonstration and instruction together with a ‘hands on’ approach for the students. There is also some class room tuition and many opportunities to discuss various topics with industry professionals.
